Sitiawan Settlement Museum: The Church Museum

This museum was once a functioning church, and it still retains its early architectural design. It is built in 1935. Inside, you'll find over 500 items including historical documents and records, along with cherished photographs detailing the major events of the pioneering efforts of early Christians from Foochow, South China.

In addition to these exhibits, the museum offers detailed explanations about the history of Sitiawan. For instance, did you know that the original name of Sitiawan was "Kampung Gajah Mati" (Death Elephant Village)? Legend has it that long ago, two white elephants attempted to cross the river. One of them slipped and fell into the rushing waters. The other elephant bravely tried to rescue its companion but unfortunately, both elephants perished in the attempt. In memory of these noble creatures, the villagers named the river "Sungai Gajah Mati" (River of the Death Elephant), and the nearby village became known as Kampung Gajah Mati.
